Let’s Talk interview for PDN

I was thrilled to speak to Holly Hughes of PDN about my video work. A lot of photographers have started working in video because they have to—but I’ve really enjoyed embracing and exploring the medium. I always aim to create a seamless transition between my still and video work, and my work for West Elm in South Africa was a perfect example of that. It was great to share a bit of my experience as a director. Check it out!

The Burkhardt’s New Orleans Home for HGTV Magazine

When the Burkhardts gave us the tour of their New Orleans home, one of the first things they showed us was the stain on their pantry door showing how high the water level was in their home in the aftermath of Katrina. I could scarcely believe it given how beautiful their home looked. They have done an amazing job of restoring their home after it was virtually destroyed by the flood waters. It was such an inspiring shoot - to see how hard they had worked to bring their home - and a part of their neighborhood - back to life.

I’m no stranger to shooting in small spaces, but this place may take the cake. I had to do some serious acrobatics to fit myself behind the camera in this little home. If you can say one thing about New Yorkers, it’s that they excel at making beautiful, functional spaces out of very little.

Roxy Te Owens, of the fabulous furniture and accessories line Society Social, invited HGTV Magazine in to see how she packs style into every inch of her 400sq ft apartment. She really does make the most of it!

Being a HUGE Amazing Race fan, I was really looking forward to working with Josh and Brent of Beekman 1802. It was right in the middle of the season and, after a couple of rough episodes, it wasn’t clear how they would make out. Those boys have got their poker face down because they never let on that they had actually won the race! Apart from being race winners, they run a goat farm, make soap, cheese, and head a growing lifestyle brand. Below are some of the other players from Sharon Springs.

Here are some outtakes for a story I shot for Better Homes and Garden’s February issue. We shot this shortly after Hurricane Sandy, and even though the heat hadn’t been turned back on in the studio, our model was unfazed. Everyone else kept their coast and hats on all day!

You know sometimes when you meet someone and you immediately click? That was definitely the case with Ann Rae. We had dinner the night before the shoot started and we talked about everything under the sun except for the shoot. Such an interesting and vibrant woman - and it turns out she knows my aunt and uncle. Small world! Needless to say, we had a great time working with Ann - a truly gracious host throughout a long and sometimes challenging shoot. Enjoy!

We got to hang out recently with one of the owners of Booker & Dax, the bar associated with Momofuku Ssam. Dave Arnold, a chef and a leader in the field of molecular gastronomy, took some time to show us around his lab and demonstrate how he winterizes a classic cocktail, the Whiskey Sour. Watch out for that blow torch!

Earlier this year, I traveled down to Wilmington, NC to photograph Lindsey and Grayson Cheek for HGTV Magazine. Lindsey is an interior designer with her own company, Poplin & Queen and a blogger. It was great to see how they had transformed their shotgun home into a space that really represents her as a designer, but is still livable for their whole family.

There’s nothing like watching a chef at home to really show you how little you know about cooking. Now, I’ve never admitted to being any good in the kitchen, but watching Aaron Sanchez just grab some ingredients out of the fridge and start whipping up a meal really proved how little I know and how talented he is. We got to spend the afternoon with Aaron and his family last summer out at their house on Long Island and watching him throw together dinner for his friends was truly spectacular. I almost tried to sneak back and crash his dinner!

She had loads of great ideas for making your home holiday ready without feeling like you’ve fallen into a window display at Macy’s. I love all the whites and greens throughout the house - somehow it makes Christmas feel like Spring!

Getting to peek into someone’s home is always one my favorite things about what I get to do for a living. And even better when that person’s home lives up to the image they present. I photographed Nicole Gibbons of So Haute Style for HGTV Magazine, and walking into her apartment was like looking through the pages of her blog. She lives the dream! Seriously, Nicole has created such a beautiful space in her Harlem apartment, I could have hung out all day. And, on top of it all, Nicole was super fun to work with!

I hope when my kid is a teenager our home will be the kind of place he wants to hang out in with his friends - well, maybe just one quiet friend. But that’s exactly the kind of home Kelly McKenna has created for her two kids. I got to spend a couple of days with the McKennas earlier this year for HGTV Magazine, and when we were done, I totally understood why her kids stay close to home - a great space, lots of room for lounging and really good snacks! Thanks Kelly!

I am so excited that I have my new showreel to share. As directing has become a bigger part of what I do, I have really been wanting to make a reel that showcases the variety of directing work that I have been doing and how it fits with my still work. Some of these assignments were directing only, some were directing and shooting stills and there is also a broad representation of still work. My goal is to make the connection between my directing work and my still work as seamless as possible and I believe this reel really delivers that. Enjoy!

West Elm - Meet the Makers

This past March, I traveled to South Africa to document the partners in West Elm’s largest collaboration to date. In addition to capturing the beautiful landscapes and street scenes of Cape Town, I photographed many of West Elm’s partner designers and artists, and documented some of my studio visits on video. It was amazing to visit this beautiful place and get to know some enormously talented people.
